Offices of LTO Stress Proper Dress Code

It is unclear whether the House Bill passed or if there are any other policies being implemented to promote equality and lessen discrimination based on how people dress.

The Land Transportation Office and its branch agencies, as well as other Philippine government offices, still require citizens to observe proper decorum, “dress for the occasion,” and present themselves in their “Sunday’s best” to be able to visit the agency personally.

LTO Dress Code for Clients

Despite the fact that government employees and officials are required to adhere to certain dress codes, there is no law requiring citizens to do the same. House Bill No. 6286, otherwise known as the Open Door Policy Act, filed in 2015, calls for removing strict dress codes. Filipinos, especially marginalized ones, are prevented from accessing services by the dress code policy, which was dubbed “unjust” and “restrictive.”.

The LTO dress code is contained in a series of reminders, containing information on what to wear and what not to wear when visiting their offices. As part of the reminders, detailed images are included, showing what is permitted and what is prohibited when visiting their offices nationwide for both men and women.

Benefits of Following the LTO Dress Code

In addition to the obvious benefit of wearing “decent” clothes when visiting the agency, following the dress code has other benefits, including:

  • An indication that you are serious about what you intend to transact

  • The work demonstrates the highest standards of excellence, professionalism, intelligence, and skill.

  • It shows respect for both the office and the officers/public servants within it

  • It demonstrates how responsive and understanding LTO clients are

  • As a pass, it serves as an entryway into the office or any government office

Who Should Follow the Dress Code Uniform

In addition to employees, the LTO imposes a dress code on the transacting public as well. While the dress code they impose on their staff is slightly different since government employees and officials observe a certain dress code by law, the one they impose on their clients is generalized, much like that imposed by most government offices everywhere.

Official Dress Code Implemented by the LTO for their Visitors

Despite some branches’ leniencies, the LTO has once again made it clear that they have a dress code for their clients, the transacting public. According to a social media post on the official LTO Facebook page, the following dress code should be followed:

Dress Code for Males / Men

A male driver or motorcycle rider should wear a polo shirt, jeans, and presentable shoes. As a rule, a short-sleeved shirt and jeans are the bare minimum clothing that must be worn before they are allowed entry into the LTO office and can be attended to by an employee. To be entertained at the LTO office, the outfit must be paired with closed shoes and they must wear closed toed shoes.

Consequently, men visiting the LTO for any transaction cannot wear sleeveless shirts, also known as sandos. Additionally, they are also refused entry if they wear shorts, which is why it is best to wear long pants rather than shorts. The wearing of open footwear, including slippers, is also prohibited when transacting with this government agency.

Dress Code for Females

When it comes to female drivers and motorcycle riders who are visiting the LTO office for the first time, the same rules apply pretty much to all of them. In order to meet the requirements of the LTO, women are required to wear a polo-style shirt or upper garment, paired with either jeans or slacks and a presentable pair of shoes.

It is also a requirement that they wear closed shoes in order to gain entry into the premises of the LTO in the same manner as the men.

As a general rule, the ladies are prohibited from wearing sandos, tube tops, tank tops, and sleeveless or any other “revealing” type of upper clothing at all times. In spite of the fact that skirts were not labeled as “inappropriate” in general, there were certain length requirements for “decent” skirts that had to be adhered to.

In the same way that men are not permitted to wear shorts and slippers, women are also not permitted to wear shorts and slippers. Slippers, in fact, are not even considered to be a type of footwear that is specifically designed for women.

Summary

The agency continues to enforce one and maintain the respectability they aim for, despite many people disagreeing on whether a dress code for visitors to government offices is necessary. Despite the Open Door Policy’s advocacy for equality, few will admit that they are, in fact, discriminating against people based on their attire. Until then, however, it is important to consider the dress code when visiting the LTO or any other government office.
